Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center

Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center

What They Do:

Empower families to make positive changes by accessing health and social services, improving educational skills, becoming more engaged in the community, and achieving self-sufficiency. They align services with partners in private, public, and nonprofit sectors to meet clients’ most pressing needs. In 2017, Puertas Abiertas added immigration assistance and mental health and wellness programs.

Puertas Abiertas’ programs include case mentoring, English as a Second Language (ESL), free tax preparation, civic engagement, mobile Mexican passport/ID clinic, a seniors’ and women’s support group, a college readiness program, basic computer skills, and Plaza Comunitaria (a Spanish literacy program). Puertas Abiertas is a long-time trusted partner in the community.

My three kids were granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and we hope their status won’t be in jeopardy with our new president. I cannot imagine how they will feel if they are forced to go back to being undocumented. Some families will be in a very difficult position because of their differing immigration status within the family and the cost of becoming documented. What will happen to our kids?
